FAUX MARBLE

Faux Marble, or marbleizing, is the painting technique of making things look like marble. There are numerous examples of this in the villas of ancient Pompei and Hurculaneum in Italy and it was widely used in the villas and palaces of Europe during the Renaissance. In 19th century England Thomas Kershaw brought the technique to such a convincing level that he had to do public demonstrations to convince people he had obtained the results merely by painting.

I used to give tours in the Newport RI Mansions where there are wonderful examples of this craft by the best 19th century European artisans employed by the Vanderbilts and other wealthy industrialists to decorate their homes. I was smitten by their extraordinary illusions then and love marbleizing to this day.
